To understand SEO, it’s crucial to know how search engines operate. The process can be broken down into three stages: Crawling, Indexing, and Ranking.

Crawling: Search engines deploy bots called spiders that crawl the web, moving from site to site, collecting information about those websites and sending it back to the search engine’s servers.

Indexing: Post-crawling, the search engines process and organize the information collected. They index this data and store it in massive databases, ready to be retrieved when a user makes a related search query.

Ranking: When a search query is made, search engines aim to provide the most relevant answers from their index. This process of serving the best possible results to the searcher is known as ranking.

4. SEO Pillars: Relevance, Authority, and User Experience
Search engines use complex algorithms to sort through their index when serving search results. They consider a variety of factors – well over 200 in the case of Google. These factors can broadly be organized into three pillars: Relevance, Authority, and User Experience.

Relevance: To assess relevance, search engines look at factors such as the content of a website and its metadata to determine if it matches a user’s search query.

Authority: Authority is a measure of how trustworthy and reliable a source is. Websites that are considered high-authority often have a lot of quality backlinks (links from other sites).

User Experience: This is a newer SEO trend. Search engines now consider how users interact with sites. Are they staying on the page for a long time (dwell time)? Do they click through multiple pages? Is the website mobile-friendly? These are all indicators of a positive user experience.

5. On-Page and Off-Page SEO
On-Page SEO: This pertains to the elements of a webpage that can be optimized to improve its ranking. It includes content creation, keyword optimization, HTML tags, URL structure, and more.

Off-Page SEO: Off-page SEO involves activities conducted outside your website to enhance its online visibility, like backlinking from other reputable websites, social media marketing, and influencer marketing.
